Disarray was founded by UC Berkeley RISELab alumni Doris Xin and Moustafa AbdelBaky to build AI research agents for long-horizon autonomy over heterogeneous data.
The team combines deep systems research with hands-on experience building production ML, autonomous orchestration, and safety-critical AI systems. Disarray’s starting point is ML model development, but the broader goal is to build research agents that can navigate messy context, sustain open-ended experimental loops, and compound knowledge over time.

Doris Xin
Co-founder & CEO
Doris Xin brings a decade of research and industry experience in production ML systems and model-development automation. She earned her PhD at UC Berkeley’s RISELab as an NSF Graduate Research Fellow, collaborated with Google Research and Microsoft Research, was an early ML engineer at LinkedIn, and contributed to Spark MLlib as Databricks’ first intern.
Her research revolved around understanding and removing the engineering bottlenecks in ML development and productionization, using large-scale empirical studies of how ML pipelines behave in practice and human-centered research on where automation helps most, so AI can streamline tedious data drudgery while keeping practitioners in control of high-judgment modeling decisions. Her research, including work with Google Research and Microsoft Research, has appeared at ACM SIGMOD, VLDB, ACM CHI, ACM RecSys, and JMLR.
At Disarray, she is building the system her research argued should exist: autonomous agents that close context gaps, reuse prior work, and automate the tedious parts of ML development while keeping practitioners in control of high-judgment decisions.
Moustafa Abdelbaky
Co-founder & CTO
Moustafa brings two decades of research on autonomous orchestration of complex, unpredictable systems: from distributed systems at Rutgers and IBM Research, where he was a three-time IBM PhD Fellow, to edge-native ML as a postdoc at UC Berkeley RISELab, to serving as a Technical Director at NASA Ames, where he received NASA’s Early Career Achievement Medal for secure, real-time AI systems in autonomous aviation and space missions.
Across these domains, he saw the same failure mode: autonomy breaks not because components aren’t capable, but because systems can’t track what data they used, what code changed, and what environment they’re operating in.
At Disarray, he is building the systems that let long-running research agents stay grounded: preserving state, supervising trajectories, enforcing constraints, and keeping context reliable across data, code, experiments, and execution history.
